Best way to eat an elephant

There is a classic joke, “what’s the best way to eat an elephant?” … “one bite at a time”. In the same way, you can’t run a marathon or set a personal record at the gym without putting in the training. This new year, it’s best to set your goals in small goal “bites” instead of setting goals as whole “elephants”.

Small goals are achievable. When you break a large goal into smaller, manageable pieces, it becomes less daunting. These small wins give you a sense of accomplishment and keep you motivated to keep going. Whether it’s adding a few more minutes to your workout, increasing your reps by a small number, or walking just a little farther, each step forward reinforces progress.

Small goals also build consistency which is the key to long-term fitness success. Small goals help you develop habits that stick because they are realistic and sustainable. Rather than overcommitting and burning out, you can create a routine that fits your lifestyle, making it easier to stay on track.

Striving for small goals reduces the risk of injury. Jumping into an intense workout routine without properly building up your strength or endurance can lead to injury. By setting smaller goals, you give your body time to adapt and strengthen gradually, which reduces the risk of overuse injuries.

Instead of worrying about where you want to be months from now, think about what you can do today. Celebrate each victory, no matter how small, and watch as your fitness journey unfolds in a way that feels achievable and rewarding. After all, in fitness and life, the small steps are the ones that lead to lasting change.

Happy goal setting, happy New Year,
