Neck Pain

Hours at a desk, long stretches looking down at a phone, and stress carried in the shoulders all add up, and for a lot of people the result is a stiff, aching neck. The reassuring part is that most neck pain is mechanical and settles with the right care, movement, and a few changes to how you hold yourself through the day.

What neck pain can feel like

It might be stiffness that makes it hard to check your blind spot, an ache at the base of the skull by the end of the day, or tightness that spreads across the shoulders and upper back. Some people also notice headaches that seem to start in the neck. How and when your neck bothers you helps us understand what is driving it.

Common causes we see

The head is heavy, around 10 to 12 pounds, and the further it drifts forward from over your shoulders, the harder the neck and upper back muscles have to work to hold it up. Sustained desk and phone postures, a pillow that does not suit you, sleeping awkwardly, and simple day-to-day stress are the usual suspects. Often it is not one thing but the total load over time.

How we assess it

We start with your history and how the pain behaves, then assess how your neck and upper back move and where things feel restricted. We want to understand the source, whether that is joint stiffness, muscle tension, posture and load, or a mix, before we suggest a plan. Then we explain what we are seeing in plain language.

How we help

Care often combines gentle hands-on treatment to ease stiff joints and tight muscles with massage therapy where it helps, plus simple exercises and posture cues you can use through the day. Chiropractic care and, for some people, medical acupuncture can be part of the plan too. The aim is to get the area moving comfortably again and give you a few practical habits so it is less likely to come back.

When to get it checked sooner

Most neck pain is not serious, but a few signs deserve prompt medical attention. If your neck pain follows a significant trauma, or comes with numbness, weakness, or pins and needles down an arm that is not settling, dizziness, trouble with balance or speech, or severe headache unlike your usual, please seek medical care. If anything like that comes up in your assessment, we will refer you on right away.

Is chiropractic care safe for the neck?

Care is always based on a thorough assessment first, and the approach is tailored to you, not everyone receives the same technique. We talk through what we plan to do and why, and there are always gentler options for people who prefer them. If we have any concern that hands-on care is not appropriate for your situation, we will say so and help you find the right path.

Do I need a referral?
