Conditions we help with

Rib sprain care in Burlington.

Most people come in saying they “put a rib out.” It started with a reach into the back seat or a bad coughing fit, and now every deep breath ends in a sharp catch. Usually it is a rib sprain: irritation of the small joints where a rib meets the spine or breastbone, often with the intercostal muscles (the small muscles between the ribs) joining in. It feels alarming, but it is common and very manageable.

What a rib sprain can feel like

The classic sign is a sharp catch with a deep breath, a cough, a sneeze, or a laugh. Twisting, reaching overhead, or rolling over in bed can set it off too. Most people can point to one spot beside the spine or between the shoulder blades, though it can wrap around the side or show up near the breastbone. Breathing is the giveaway because every rib moves with each breath, swinging up and out like the handle of a bucket being lifted. When a joint at the hinge of that handle is irritated, it gets a say in every breath.

Common causes we see

It rarely takes much. An awkward reach or lift with a twist in it is the story we hear most: a bag from the back seat, a child out of a car seat. A long coughing bout during a cold can do it, since each cough is a quick, forceful squeeze of the ribcage. Sports with a lot of rotation, like golf, tennis, and paddling, are frequent culprits too.

Your care

How we help

Care usually pairs gentle hands-on treatment with simple movement you can keep up at home. Depending on what we find, that might include chiropractic adjustments to the mid back and rib joints, soft tissue work for the muscles along the spine and between the ribs, and for some people medical acupuncture or massage therapy. We add a few easy breathing and mobility exercises through exercise and rehab, plus tips for sleeping and getting through a cough. That sharp catch is a signal from a sensitive joint, not a sign you are doing damage by breathing, so staying gently active usually beats holding everything still. If we do not think we are the right fit for what you are dealing with, we will tell you and point you somewhere better.

How we assess it

We start with how it began and what sets it off, then watch how the pain changes as you breathe, twist, and reach. We check how your mid back moves and press gently along the rib where it meets the spine and breastbone. Rib joint pain usually changes with movement and position, so we also make sure your symptoms fit that pattern. Then we explain what we found in plain language.

When to get it checked sooner

Most rib pain like this is not serious, but see a medical doctor promptly if you have chest pain with shortness of breath, pain that followed a significant fall or impact (a rib can fracture), if you are coughing up blood or running a fever, or if the pain does not change at all with movement or position. Chest pain that comes on with exertion or spreads into the arm or jaw needs emergency care, so call 911. These point to something other than a rib sprain. We will refer you on if your assessment suggests it.

Common questions

Rib sprain questions

Is my rib actually out of place?
Almost never, even though it can feel that way. A rib is anchored by small joints and strong ligaments, and it does not slip out with a reach or a sneeze. More often one of those joints gets irritated and the muscles around it tighten to guard it, which creates that sharp, stuck feeling. When we use hands-on care, the aim is to help the area move more comfortably, not to put anything back in place.
Should I rest it and avoid deep breaths?
Keep breathing normally, deep breaths included, even if they catch a little. Hugging a pillow to your chest can make coughs and sneezes easier to get through. Ease off whatever clearly flares it, like heavy lifting or big twists, but keep up gentle everyday activity. Many rib sprains improve over a few weeks, and we will give you an honest sense of yours after your assessment. No referral is needed to book; our fees and insurance page covers pricing and direct billing.
