What actually happens at your first chiropractic visit (and does it hurt)?

A lot of people put off booking simply because they do not know what they are walking into. Fair enough. So here is the whole thing, start to finish, with the mystery removed.

Will you just crack my back right away?

No. The first visit is mostly listening and looking, not treating. We start with your story: what is bothering you, when it started, what makes it better or worse, and what you are hoping to get back to. Then we do a physical assessment, watching how you move, testing a few things, and checking the areas involved. Only once we understand what is going on do we talk about a plan. If anything we find belongs with your doctor or another provider, we will tell you that too.

Does an adjustment hurt?

For most people, no. An adjustment is a quick, controlled movement of a joint, and many people find it more relieving than uncomfortable, though responses vary. That noise people brace for is not bones grinding, it is a small release of gas from inside the joint (the technical name is cavitation), the same harmless pop you get when you crack a knuckle.

It is normal to feel a bit of soreness afterward, a little like the day after a new workout. That usually settles quickly, and many people feel looser afterward.

Do I need X-rays or a referral?

Usually not. Most everyday aches and stiffness do not require imaging, and you do not need a doctor’s referral to see a chiropractor in Ontario. If something in your history or exam suggests we need a closer look, we will arrange it rather than guess.

How should I come prepared?

Keep it simple. Wear comfortable clothes you can move in, bring any relevant details about your issue (and your benefits information if you have coverage), and come ready to describe what you are feeling in your own words. You do not need to arrive an expert in your own spine, that is our job.

If that clears the last hurdle, you can read more on our chiropractic care page, or simply book and we will take it from there.

The first visit is really just a conversation and an assessment. No surprises, no pressure, and no, we will not crack anything you are not comfortable with.

See you soon,
