Is it normal to be sore after a chiropractic adjustment?

By Dr. Cole Maranger, DC 2 min read

Some people have never been to a chiropractor because they’re afraid that an adjustment or soft tissue work will be really painful. The good news? Getting some movement in a tight joint or muscle often makes it more relaxed and offers better pain free range of motion after treatment. But is it normal to have soreness after treatment?

The short answer is that it can be but not always. Everybody’s body is different and responds differently to different types of treatments. If you do have any soreness, it is likely for a day and should go away with more motion and ice or heat. It’s one of our most commonly talked about points in an initial assessment actually. This is because when you have an injury or stiffness in the body, it can already have heightened sensation. A flared up joint or strained muscle will be sending more signals than normal to tell the brain what movements are good and what movements hurt.

Often, when we run through orthopedic tests or slow range of motion tests in the clinic, the joints can actually get incredible relief… and that’s before the treatment even begins! When we work through the muscle or joint that is causing the pain, it may be temporarily achy after.

Remember, you’re always the captain of the treatment plan and can inform your chiropractor or RMT to lighten up the pressure or avoid any areas you feel are sensitive. We’re always open to modifying the treatment for your comfort level.

Happy treatments, happy moving!
